Now Serving! Maharlika-Tasty Filipino Brunch in the East Village

I recently had the pleasure to sit in at Maharlika's pop up brunch restaurant where they're serving up traditional Filipino breakfast dishes and twists on Brunch cocktails til the end of March. I was in heaven as my table was filled with practically the whole menu of savory deliciousness that would prove nostalgic to any Filipino who has lost contact with their native cuisine. From the Sisig(pig parts served sizzling on a cast iron skillet topped with 2 eggs sunny up to the tradition Tocilog(Cured pork with Garlic fried rice and 2 eggs and everything in between. Mmmmmm.

Although the concept of a Filipino restaurant isn't new to New York, I feel that the Nicole Ponseca, a former Ad agency executive and Enzo Lim a famed NYC bartender and musician are taking a fresh approach in presenting a taste of the food of 7107 islands that make up the Philippine archipelago.

I had a chance to talk with them briefly in between a packed house of guests and heres what they had to say:

Boulevardist(B): Where were you both born and where did you grow up?
Enzo: Metro Manila
Nicole: I was born in Philadelphia and raised in California... I also spent time in the Philippines studying the food.

(B): Why Maharlika as a name?
Enzo:It conveys a rich sense of history. In one sense it refers to nobility -- a warrior noble class to be respected and loved. But it also generates a sense of nationalism.

(B):What inspired you to do this?
Nicole:
I was working in advertising and occasionally would have to wine and dine my clients. Eventually, the conversation came up about filipino food and where we could go to get some. To be honest, i didn't want to take them to turo turo(filipino fast food) or go to Queens....the offerings at the time didn't showcase the food in a way that could compete with other non-filipino restaurants (e.g. service, presentation, ambiance, wine list, cocktail list, etc.). I started telling myself...I can do this..." so i started working two jobs concurrent with my day job so i could learn the business....hosting, serving, bartending, running, bussing, managing....not sleeping.

(B): What culinary message are you voicing in your concept?
Enzo: We want to take a modern, studied spin on classics. As with the food, so in cocktails. Basically, it's important to show people that they are already somewhat familiar with this food / drink. Everybody's got that one Filipino friend, right?

Nicole: in one word: pride. I want to educate on our history and culture through food. Why is Vietnam and Thailand a common travel destination and not the Philippines? I think its due in part to food....so when you are introduced to goi cuon or pad thai, you start getting curious about the country and culture...well, if you cannot afford the pricey ticket to the Philippines, perhaps you can afford a more accessible dinner amongst 5 friends...and then you might be more curious about the country and the culture...and maybe then people might be more interested in visiting the country....

(B): Why pop-up?
Nicole: I saw the success of Egg, and its history of popping up at Sparkys years ago. For us, it became a recession-based solution to getting a business off the ground. We are helping our host restaurant pay the bills and they are helping us get the dream materialized. I wish i could say i had some genius master plan about popping up, but it was all about preparation and being in the right place in the right time....i guess kinda like the book Outliers....

(B): Since this has proven a success whats your next steps?
Nicole: i'm so entirely grateful for the websites, bloggers, facebook, the reservations and walk ins every weekend. on our first week, we looked at each other and only had 4 tables...i was like "uh...dear god...please send people"...then by the third week, we had reservations booked over a week in advance! Next steps: keep improving and exploring opportunities to share the food.

I was surprised by a plate of Balut. Its a delicacy in the Philippines not for the weak stomach but for the culinary challenger as it was featured on fear-factor. I took the Challenge. For more info click Balut.

As they search for a more permanent space to hang up their decorative wooden fork and spoon, I look forward to their goal of Maharlika becoming a benchmark in furthering the niche of Filipino food in the culinary world.

Maharlika Pop-up is open Saturdays and Sundays for Brunch only through the end of March.

Patti Smith's "Just Kids" book review and an inspired photo shoot

As a man forever in love with New York City and regular at haunts that still hold a sense of nostalgia such as El Quijote and the Odeon, I also enjoy hearing stories about the icons that contributed to the creativity of our beloved city.

Lately I've noticed lots of folks reading the new Patti Smith book "Just Kids" and although I haven't read it yet, I've been talking about the book with a dear friend and writer Kara Hughett who's in love with it.

Heres what she had to say about it:

"Perhaps it's my impending birthday rounding the corner that calls for necessary reflection, or quite possibly it's Patti Smith's recent memoir, Just Kids, that has me honing in more so on my daily interactions and what forms of creativity I allow to into my life. Just Kids is a detailed recount of Smith's relationship with legendary photographer, Robert Mapplethorpe and those crucial kinship's made within her critical coming-of-age years. Make Cocktails, Will Travel

Hello from Sunny Miami!

As a cocktail slinger, its been my pleasure and honor to be one of 3 semi-finalists from New York in the 2011 Bacardi Legacy cocktail competition. In between beach time and cocktails at the Florida Room, I will compete for the US title and a chance to compete in the International finals, which will be held in Spain. Yes. The goal of the competition is to create the next iconic Bacardi cocktail such as the Mojito, Dacquiri and the Rum & Coke. We were also asked to present the inspiration for the cocktail and its marketability.

The Grand Prize winner will get an all expenses paid trip to 5 major cities around the world to bartend (and get paid) at the top cocktail bar under their Master Mixologist. Along with that, Bacardi will create a global marketing campaign dedicated to the winning cocktail.

In 2010, I had it set in my mind that I was going to be traveling throughout 2011.

I wish my fellow competitors Rob Fuentevilla of both PainkillerNYC and Mayahuel and Brian Matthys of Compose Bar the best of luck as we represent New York and beyond.

The Black Cocktail Concept

So I was given the challenge to create a cocktail in the color black. This cocktail will be paired with an amuse bouche and showcased for the upcoming CMYK cocktail event (in conjunction with the Umami Festival). With such a complex color to work with I had to take my imagination for a dark stroll. This is my cocktail manifesto.

Concept for Cocktail Noir

It is a personal return to the color Black.

I see Sophistication & Fashion. I fantasize about the 80’s underground art scene and the lawless side of New York with its rebellious youth.

It was bad to be in Black.

When we go further in time,imagine Film Noir where there’s murder, mystery, intrigue, seduction, suspense and strife. Onscreen as the Vampires bite into their victims they open the gates to release this Black elixir of life lost and eternity regained.

There is beauty in the darkness of the shadows.

This cocktail represents those visions and each flavor represents a
condition when fused together creates a cinematic experience for the
senses.

Black Vodka* (sophistication/mystery in the color)
Sweet vermouth (seduction in the wine)
Blood orange (suspense in the citrus)
Black Pepper Syrup(strife in the spice)
Spray of Orange blossom water (is your first hint of intrigue)

* the “Blavod Vodka” is the only black vodka on the market. The vodkas unique black color derives from Black Catechu, extracts from the heartwood of Burmese catechu acacia trees. Such additives reportedly don't interfere with the characteristics of the vodka, adding no additional flavor or odor. Catechu also doesn't stain nor leave a trace of other flavours although does smooth out the vodka.

Tonight I got to catch a screening at the IFC cinema for an inspiring documentary about one of my favorite singers, Bill Withers.

STILL BILL is an intimate portrait of soul legend Bill Withers, best known for his classics “Ain’t No Sunshine,” “Lean On Me,” “Lovely Day,” “Grandma’s Hands,” and “Just the Two of Us.” I was very pleased with how the filmmakers were able to capture the soul and simple honesty not only in his music and lyrics but in Bill Withers the man and his story. I think that I speak for many of us when I say his music resonates through all of our lives in one way or another.

From film synopsis:
"Filmmakers Damani Baker and Alex Vlack follow Withers and offer a unique and rare look inside the world of this fascinating man. Through concert footage, journeys to his birthplace, interviews with music legends, his family and closest friends, STILL BILL presents the story of an artist who has written some of the most beloved songs in our time and who truly understands the heart and soul of a man".

Unfortunately this documentary won't reach the movie houses but fortunately will be released on DVD soon.

As a lover, part time slinger and part time geek of the cocktail, I was in good "spirits" all weekend for the preview of the 1st Annual Manhattan Cocktail Classic. We reveled in libations and watched the Official Bar in the Astor Center pump out cocktails from some of the most talented cocktail cats in the country.

The preview weekend to the Manhattan Cocktail classic, a festival of seminars and tastings with a goal of preserving the history, culture and art of the cocktail gave us just a touch of what the full 5 day event will be like in May. Attendees got a chance to see, hear and taste with the thought leaders and tastemakers of the cocktail and spirit industry as they talked about some of their favorite points of the culture through seminars. I dipped into the "Cocktails for Your Home Cocktail Party" seminar with Sasha Petraske and picked up a few great tips for the next time I entertain at home. I imagine the avid consumer found this seminar really exciting as he went through lots of great little tips on things such as the quality of ice as well as specifics on counts per person when hosting a cocktail party and how to properly use your bar tools. Out in the main bar area, I got a chance to chat with folks like David Wondrich, Dale DeGroff and even cracked a joke with Gary Regan at his book release party that was held at the new Crosby hotel.

The kicker of the weekend was the gala that was held in the gorgeous New York Public library's Grand Astor Hall. 12 bars represented by different brands and again bartenders from the most established cocktail joints were in full sling for our sipping pleasure. My lovely date and I sipped on whiskey cocktails all night and danced to the big band jazz sounds of Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks.

It was a fancy affair for the cocktail scene and I was happy to be a part of it. Can't wait for May's events!

A Liquid Concerto in 4 parts

As I continue on my mission to spread the word of where to get a good cocktail with Nirvino, an online network for cocktail and wine enthusiasts, I share with you a quick recap of my latest cocktail tasting event.

This last Tuesday Nirvino Ambassadors got a real treat once again in Midtown for another Ambassador cocktail review. We had the pleasure this time to experience Rouge Tomate, a beautifully airy and fairly new restaurant thats received lots of buzz for addressing social and environmental issues and seeking out farmers who provide local and seasonal produce. They've developed innovative cooking techniques that ignite the natural flavors while heightening the nutritional value of each dish. Now you put that same philosophy into cocktails and your cocktail just isnt the same anymore.

We were set up in their lower level cocktail lounge StirRed where mixologist Rain Lampariello formerly of Lever House conducted a symphony of flavor and gave us some education on their cocktail philosophy.

We imbibed a 4 course cocktail tasting menu that included a mini Moscow Mule as a palette cleanser and led into the 3 main cocktails of the evening.

Heres what the Ambassadors had to say about them.

Annie S. takes a sip of the Electric Honeydew and gets a lil dreamy "Sweet and sumptuous honeydew melon gets an electric kick in infused gin form. A genius combination with mint tea and honey as the inspiration. Fresh and spiky and shockingly pleasurable...like an icicle in August."

Josh B. goes far east and beyond with the Singapore Sling-"Malaysia with its strict Islamic liquor laws and gorgeous brothels make this drink a little mysterious. It was bold with cold blocks of ice and that helps in NY sweltering weather. My friend Liz had never been to to Asia but after one drink, when she hopped into the cab and yelled, Singaore, Buster!"...woah.

Dylan B. gets inspired by the Tequila Maria-"Drinking this is like picking vegetables from your own backyard garden that grows some of the best tomatoes, basil, and peppers. But rather than using those vegetables for a fresh caprese salad, mix their juices with tequila and you've now got your garden in a glass. Zesty, spicy, and fresh."

There you have it again folks. There's a story in every fine crafted cocktail and theres a place to talk about it.

Mixing cocktails & Swimming in Dumpsters

Last Friday I was invited to create cocktails for a secret pool party and swim in pools made out of dumpsters on the banks of the Gowanus Canal in industrial Brooklyn.For those who have either heard about or read about this infamous space you'd know that very few were able to experience this unique and somewhat magical space that was surrounded in urban decay.

*On a rented lot that’s hidden from the street they have erected what they call a lo-fi urban country club: three connected pools housed in Dumpsters; a boccie court; some lounge chairs, grills and cabanas.

*The idea, said David Belt, a real estate developer and the president of Macro-Sea, the company behind the pools, was not to create an exclusive party destination but to experiment with underused space and materials, repurposing them with urban renewal in mind.

The party was organized by Jonathan Schnapp, Tahir Hemphill, Chanel(not the brand), and Tristan of Tough Dumpling. Jonathan Schnapp who is a friend of David Belt was given an open invitation to throw a party in the space. He brought in bands, Djs, a 6' whale pinata,3 pork roasts for the grill and about 60 guests filled with good vibes.

The bands that played were The Faculty who dropped a a cool live Hip Hop session and Tamar Kali who put it down harder than most could pick up with her afropunk sound. The djs were Tough Dumpling, Radar, Workhorse, Jake, Virgil and Richard who all kept the ebb and flow of the dance floor on point.

As for them doing it again, they'd love to, but the pools are being deconstructed this Tuesday, so we've probably seen the last of the dumpster pools in this current incarnation.

I guess I can say I got a chance to swim in a dumpster as many of us first timers had the odd experience of sharing together.

Keep your ears and eyes open. Theres so many random events happening in New York, beneath the surface and around your corner.

Ping Pong and Puma anyone?

After the epic badminton showdown at GOVERNORS ISLAND with TRETORN last month, RECESS is back this SATURDAY AUGUST 22ND at COLONELS ROW from 12PM - 5PM, this time with a SANDPAPER PADDLE TABLE TENNIS challenge with PUMA, the true originals in the ping pong explosion (as it is affectionately known). The game itself is currently going through a renaissance in the US but for the RECESS showdown, we've decided to put a little twist on the game, a sandpaper version that will even the playing field, and more co-ed friendly. While 32 various teams from the creative community battle their way to the finals, there will also be open public tables to test your skill at the sport, paddles provided. Monkeys, Cocktails and Emotions

This past Tuesday marked another installment of the Nirvino Ambassador Cocktail Review. As we build our cocktail community here in NY we’re also venturing out of our box we call downtown in search for tasty drinks. Ambassadors and guests got to once again take part in creating the first online menu of all the best drinks New York has to offer. Beekman Bar and Books was the perfect spot for this stop for Bols Genever Cocktails. Known for its fine whiskies and cigars this libation pad also has a running theme of monkeys carved in wood and in artwork all throughout the space. Perfect.

Mixologist, Ben Scorah of Beekman Bar and Books created the tasty cocktails for the evening, including the Holland Razorblade which is currently on their menu. As we opened the Nirvino gates for on-site reviews it was also the other cocktails on the menu, the Dutch Blood and Sand and the Green Apple Infused Old Fashioned that equally captured the palettes and emotions of some of our Ambassadors. Might we have another potential Bols Genever cocktail for the menu?? Heres what they had to say.

Matthew L. calls the Dutch Blood & Sand "an explosion of flavor.This is one pinkish colored drink that I will display proudly as I enjoy it!"

Nicole T. says the Holland Razorblade is: "Like biting into a citrus fruit while looking out the window through a sheer curtain at the end of summer . . . Light, refreshing, and sexy. And before the sipping experience even began, I was dazzled by the constellation of cayenne pepper sprinkled on the surface."

And Selena R. says "This one's all about the baked apple bitters, giving the sophisticated Bols a warm autumn punch. Is it fall yet?" referencing the Green Apple Infused Old Fashioned

One thing I found important about living in New York is that you gotta know when to get out of town. I had the opportunity to breathe some clean air and enjoy some moments of bliss over the last weekend thanks to my good friends at Outdoor Bound adventures. They take New Yorkers out on an extensive list of outdoor activites for quick weekend getaways without breaking your bank. I went on a 2 day hike and camped out 1 night in the Catskill Mountains and happily ditched all cell and laptop communication. I could say I may be hooked on nature again.

The hike was about 9-10 hard miles over 2 days

4 miles on day 1
6 miles on day 2

It may not sound like much but when you're hitting steep ascensions and descents at a rate of 100 feet every 10 minutes while carrying a backpack thats at least 40 pounds, you might think differently. Not to mention, I don't do this all the time. New York city it flat.

Things got a little hairy or should I say wet as we were rained on pretty hard Saturday night and Sunday afternoon. We managed to stay dry in our tents at night and although the conditions weren't ideal, it definitely made for more of an adventurous physical challenge on the climbs and drops. We even got to do a little rock climbing.It was lot of fun to power through it.

Peaks conquered were:
-Slide Mountain (4,180 feet-the highest in the Catskills)
-Cornell Mountain (3,870 feet)
-Wittenberg Mountain (3,790 feet).

And a shout out to Garan and Evan our guides for leading us into a recharging getaway.

Tales of the Cocktail 2009

Well folks I’ve finally come back to earth from my first trip to the “Tales of the Cocktail” festival and it was by far one of the funnest and craziest “work” trips I’ve taken in a long time. I had the good fortune of attending the festival as media through Nirvino which brought on a whole slew of benefits including access to some of the hottest parties of the week. See random pics below.

Work is play.

New Orleans, Louisiana is the annual host to the internationally acclaimed festival of cocktails, cuisine, and culture, Tales of the Cocktail. This event brings together the best and brightest of the cocktail community — award-winning mixologists, authors, bartenders, chefs, and designers — for a five-day celebration of the history and artistry of drink making. Each year offers a spirited series of dinners, demos, tastings, competitions, seminars, book signings, tours, and parties; all perfectly paired with some of the best cocktails ever made. Basically lots of drinking.
As part of my “work” at Tales, I arranged 2 interviews, first with Kathy Casey, one of the first female executive chefs in the country, a TV and radio personality, author of 9 cookbooks including her latest “Sips and Apps”, mixologist and a few more tricks up her sleeve. Second was exceptionally eccentric as well as the man known for keeping the splendors of the Edwardian era alive through his curiously decorated Hotel Estates in Notting Hill and his oblivious take on changes in society as a whole. Mr Miller was accompanied by his Co-creative director David Bromige who did most of the talking.

As this was the first time I were to interview anyone for anything I was very excited and somewhat nervous. As I built my list of questions specifically directed towards the industry I realized that I would just be one of the many bloggers asking the same questions and getting the same answers. That doesn’t make a Boulevardist. I realized that the people I’m looking to reach are outside of the industry so I decided to look to my fellow Nirvino Ambassadors for questions they would ask from the outside looking in.

The following are a few questions and my interpretation of their answers.

Matt S asks: "for those of us who don't use bitters often, what liquors and flavors would bitters best compliment?
Kathy Casey: With her array of different bitters she looks at using them with any spirit as you would in cooking any meat or fish. She likes to think of them as the salt, pepper or even soy sauce of cocktail mixology. So it all works and should be played with.

Catherine P asks: "I have a theory that the rise of cocktail culture might curb alcoholism because cocktail culture, in my opinion isn't about "getting wasted". It is a slightly more cerebral pursuit that includes being present, savoring, and appreciating a craft. Do you think this theory has validity and/or has potential to create a new respect for alcohol?
Martin Miller/David Bromige: (jokingly)"Well first of all, it takes longer to get wasted because the cocktails take longer to make so your forced to be cerebral about it". As a spirit that's been around for 10 years, they had to reestablish tradition and not just be a trendy spirit. They didn't want to pay to play like other big brands but rather focus on expressing the fine details of crafting their gin and let that hold as their style and fashion. They understand the the cocktail culture has been rapidly growing and because you are sipping crafted cocktails that at times will cost more, they believe that there is more appreciation and time taken to enjoying them as well as promoting more conversation in between.

Neil G asks:"I would like to hear about their favorite cocktails or any trick of the trade.
Kathy Casey: Although she's a trend forecaster, coming up with ideas that turn into tradition such as the lime in a corona is a big part of what drives her thinking process. She suggests an alternate with Asian food, a cucumber slice with a Tsingtao(its actually good!) Also, when you sit at a sushi bar you have all the fish displayed right in front of you while the chef preps your dish. Why don't these new cocktail bars use the same equipment practice? This could be a new trick in display well as keeping the fresh ingredients fresh.

As I am in this to serve I feel that this is the best way to understand what the consumer thinks and this industry can close into its own club at times forgetting the main reason why they're in it. To make money. Wheres the money to be made if you're only catering to your own colleagues and industry associates?

A little bit of kid in me still...rocks

This past Monday, I had the pleasure of feeling like a kid again at the AfroPunk Festival in the BAM parking lot in Brooklyn. Presented by Mountain Dew the series in its 2nd year is a movement of alternative urban skaters, BMX riders, artists and musicians of color that are also raging innovators in this typically Caucasian scene. I was mainly impressed with the Bulldog Bikes team as they dominated the quarter pipes flying way over my head getting ridiculous amounts of airtime with out an engine. It was an all out urban circus! Brooklyn is representing on the Punk Syde. Check the pics.

Heres some hi-lights:

Grammy nominated Janelle Monae who I am a new fan of tore up the stage with her intergalactic electronic soul/punk style and even got up high on a stool to give an MJ tribute with her sweet rendition of "Smile". It was pretty damn adorable for a Punk show.

I heard these two pieces were by Remix, a graffiti artist brought in from Puerto Rico. Lovin this Fela tribute.

One of my favorite modern American poets Saul Williams known for his visually spoken word and industrial hip hop style rocked the stage with his lyrics and his band that included CX Kidtronik who was just crazy with the raw beat set! I have to give special props for their outfits reminiscent of the early hip hops days of Afrika Bambatta and the Zulu nation. It was all about good rabble rousin'music and conscious lyrics. Check out Saul Williams' breakout movie "SLAM" as well as his album "Amethyst Rock Star" and take it from there.

Back out of the jacuzzi...

So its been a while since my last post. I realize what a commitment this whole blogging thing requires. And for good reason. We can experience so much in so little time that we can also forget. These moments are not only for you to look into and maybe get turned on to something new, their part of what I do and how I live my life.
Well, this past weekend I got to take part in a new movement happening in Brooklyn. The MyUberlife Rooftop Experience.Deity on Atlantic the former synagogue turn nightclub and living quarters just launched a roofdeck that is a little oasis in this great borough.

Hosted by MyUberlife in partnership with The Brooklyn Romance this new "private club" will sooner than later become the hot deck to park yourself at on a sunny Brooklyn day if you got the in's. Think of it as a little bit of that Soho house feel laced with Brooklyn flavor. They also have an aquatic element in the form of an infinity jacuzzi which I took full advantage of.

It was a day of live music showcasing a few emerging artists. We were graced with performances by Nicholas Howard who started it off on a hot note,

Rebecca Cherry brought in her own string section adding an angelic vibe to the roof.

and Naja Rosa who belted a sultry bluesy set that stirred things in the right direction.
Added were a couple cameos by Jenny Bapts who sang a quick accapella of "Rock with You" and a gent by the name of Shu who laid out some soulful keystrokes.

On the Dj side we had a solid trio, I had the opening set and led into performances then Hardy dropped a flyer than fly set post performance and MSB grabbed the baton and just took it into overdrive.The Roof was on fire!

It was an all out great day with some great people. Smiles all around.

Life is great.

Special shout goes to John Walder who captured moments of this crazy and amazing day. We were blessed with a double rainbow!!

Hello Good people,

I sure hope you enjoyed the surprisingly great weather this weekend. I took advantage on 2 wheels all weekend and surprisingly had the juice to let loose at the Body and Soul annual memorial day party. You would have thought you were at a New Years Eve gala with all the Balloons that lined Webster Hall that night. If you've followed the Body and Soul movement you know that these 3 legendary Dj's get down and do so for hours and hours and hours and hours and hours and hours...you get it right?

As a big part of my dancing history was spent in many a underground parties movin to deep house I tip my lid to these guys for bringing it that night and well into the morning. It was a musical journey with their distinct styles that just seem to flow seamlessly. Francois K with his Deep Space Soul, Danny Krivit with the Deep disco house remixes and then my favorite Joe Claussell with his percussion heavy-down and dirty house had me kickin and spinning non stop!

There was definitely no parking on this dance floor. "When you feel it in your soul let the groove take control and DANCE".

An Experimental workspace for the Summer

I had the pleasure of checking out an experimental workspace called MEET at the Apartment yesterday. Curated by the folks at the Wooster collective this pad is styled out with pieces from their collection to the Philip Stark chairs and the Malin + Goetz toiletries in the restroom. Meet at the Apartment hosts freelancers who want to get out of the house and have a space all set up with Wifi, tons of power outlets, snacks and energy drinks and all the office supplies you need. They're opening up the space free of charge for the first Monday of each month for the summer to people from all walks of the creative industry to work, gain new contacts and develop discussions within the free lancers community. Throughout the day, speakers and specialists will be giving seminars on topics such as self-branding, job hunting and blogging. The Apartment was such a well put together space that I found myself inspired to keep on creating. It was a great time and I had many interesting conversations that in one way or another redirected some of my thinking which always refreshing.

The Legendary Roots Crew do it again...

Innovators in hip-hop, The Roots has focused on live instrumentation in recordings and concerts since 1987 when rapper Black Thought (Tariq Trotter) and drummer ?uestlove (Ahmir Khalib Thompson) met at the Philadelphia High School for Creative Performing Arts. Forsaking the usual hip-hop protocol, The Roots' produced its first major-label album, Do You Want More?!!!??! (1995), without any samples or previously recorded material, and made a name for itself by defying genres and conventions. The group is known for its complex and politically aware lyrical content ranging from violence and its consequences to the crime, poverty, guns and drug culture plaguing its hometown of Philadelphia.

As a loyal fan, I've seen the Roots at least half a dozen times and I never saw the same show twice. In the tradition of musical innovation the Roots presented a series of performances call the "Roots Jam" which calls on hand picked cameos of emerging artists and a lots of surprises in between. Last night's show was inspiring and had me twitter crazy. Highlights included the explosive opening act by a collective of Phili MC's known as the 5th Dynasty,"the Phili Wu Tang" as Black Thought put it.

Mazzy Swift a female electric violinist had a solo so uplifting the lighting engineer must have had a seizure while holding the switches...it was electric!

A former keyboardist to Miles Davis was on deck and added psychedelic notes to the ensemble. Pharaoh Monch ripped the stage as did Virginia MC, Skills on a freestyle trip. A young Rwandan woman who jump onstage and owned it had the vibe of a young Grace Jones. That was hot. Chester French even joined in on now what was a hip hop orchestra. To close the show the crowd was thrown in jumping craze as Dead Prez ran up on stage and dropped their lyricist anthem "Its Bigger than Hip Hop"...ride or die.

It was an all out JAM!

The next "The Jam" session is scheduled for May 5th. Check it.

Yes, it exists and this weekend was the sure shot. Got a chance to catch the sun revelers out in the east village this past Saturday at the Porch bar for Meredith and Soo's birthday. The party was hosted by +CHILL as a kickoff to their afternoon parties they'll be throwing all spring and summer. It was a hot scene and I loved that everyone was styled out in their spring outfits. Its part of what makes sunny days even hotter. Below are pictures from the party as well as a few pics I pulled from friends posted FB pages(thanks Jason, Milena, Albana and Marion). As Annie would sing..."The sun will come out tomorrow".

Cocktailing 2.0 is in effect

This past Tuesday Nirvino took over the back lounge of Public for its first official Happy Hour event in New York. Public, a 2 level bakery in its past life, now showcases a themed setting designed to evoke public institutions like schools and libraries. Their wine and cocktail menu is as creatively expressive as their food, fusing ingredients from all over Asia to down under Australia. At the happy hour, a handful of Ambassadors on hand mingled with newcomers, giving them the lowdown on Nirvino and its new way of "drink and tell". The latest innovation to the Happy Hour events was a live "tweet" feed projected on the wall. The feed shared twitters and reviews instantly with everyone at the event and live in cyberspace.

There were sure signs of spring fever in the air as we sipped wines and cocktails from Public's current menu. Mary W. says of the Pear and Lemongrass Fizz, "The smell is zesty and sweet. Can I take a bath in it? :) I would most definitely order this for a long sunday brunch. Maybe I would order a few."

The Red Chili Guava Margarita set the event on fire as Sarah S. shouted, "Wow! I wore my pink pumps on the right night! The red chili is HOT. I loved the extra kick before you hit the guava. Feeling hot hot hot!" and Zarina N. said, "Delicious! I would love to serve this at a party and see the friends' reactions. Hot!" She's already thinking of parties!

A special thanks goes out to the crew at Public who kept our guests on schedule with the tastings and a special shout goes out to Mary behind the bar who not only shook the cocktails on point but also found time to jump out and mingle too.

Who would have thought that wine and cocktails could spark such fever? I guess it all goes down on the quest for Nirvino.

I just love finding out about the extras you would'nt normally come across unless you are in the know. After a shopping at Groupe on Elizabeth I was tipped off on a new shop to check out. This is the case of Olivers, the private made to measure mens shirt shop. Their customized and made-to-measure shirts incorporate all vintage fabrics. Just opening last month, the hidden shop whose entrance is an unmarked dressing room door in the Eleven boutique is jointly owned by vintage collector Oliver Harkness and Brazilian tailor Jussara Lee, who also runs her own namesake boutique in the meatpacking district. The compact, dimly-lit room contains industrial metal racks bearing button-downs and thick overshirts in various shades, stripes, and plaids. Oriental rugs and pair of facing pink-upholstered armchairs create an antiquated feel. The cotton shirts sport mismatched vintage dead-stock buttons and detachable collars backed by stiff linen—the fabric dates back to World War II and was used in Swiss Army military mattresses. Other versions incorporate World War II–era twill and heavy vintage wool. A glass display case holds model collars in various sizes and prints—individual collars are $48 apiece and are available in full-spread, semi-spread, rounded and wingtip styles.

Men, get fitted. Seersucker season is approaching fast.

Double up, Double down

I was strolling through the Lower East side the other night trying to figure out my move for the evening. As I walked by the Living Room I thought that some live music could be just the trick. They have decent to great acts perform nightly and its usually free. I perched my self upon the bar and had a beer, Widmer Wheat to be specific, as I continued a potentially promising text conversation(I know they're silly but it had to be done this way). There's something to be said about sending quick messages that lead into an evening of who knows what.

The live music happens through the curtains in the back so I found myself walking back and forth as a new act would come on. I started to get into this texting when I realized I was just out of juice on my phone...shortly after, death of phone for the night without a charger in sight. Stranded without the Blackberry and conversation cut. Ratts.

After venting my moment of frustration to the bartender we both realized that we knew eachother from years past. Its always good to know the bartender as I usually make it a point to. So he pours us shots of whiskey which I happily oblige. I go out for some air and look up at this sign across the street.

I came back in and asked him to make me a Negroni cocktail which he couldnt recall so I happily give him the recipe. He makes a double and then pours 2 more shots for us. I go to the back and check out some music, come back, sit down and then decide to go out for a cigarette. This is what I saw when I got out.

Folks, this is a advisory. Please use caution when you know the bartender at a dive bar.

Needless to say I live to play another day.

Fitty Fitty, Spooky and the Elephants

Hello Hello,

This is not another rap band.

Last nights stroll was rather entertaining. Started off meeting a good friend for cocktails at famous Pegu Club in soho. I had the pleasure of sipping on what is called the Fitty-Fitty. This delicious cocktail was a spin on the classic Gin martini but the Gin to Dry vermouth was of course... 50/50. Added to that was a few drops of orange bitters that appeared simple but gave it complexity to ponder on. A contemporary remix of a sophisticated cocktail. We were soon joined by another friend who turned out to be a cocktail lover as well so we had a nice chat on all the interesting things happening in the cocktail world. Cocktail lovers are out there and we're multiplying daily...Nirvino.

We then cruised on over to Le Poisson Rouge where the tank in the entrance had orange fish in it...Ba-dum-bum. There the 6th edition of Pecha Kucha NY was held. This was my first time and I was very curious. Its goes like this(edited from their website):

They invite a dozen creative professionals working across a variety of fields to present 20 slides for 20 seconds each on whatever topic the speaker pleases. This format keeps presentations concise, interest levels up, and gives more people the chance to show their work and speak about their interests. Pecha Kucha is a Japanese phrase that translates as “the sound of conversation.” Pecha Kucha Night was devised by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham of Klein Dytham Architecture as a place for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in Tokyo. Due to its popularity, Pecha Kucha Night has spread internationally to over a hundred cities.

There were quite a few topics I found interesting like Eric Sanderson's Mapping Mannahatta where he quickly and concisely talked about the ecological history of Mannahatta aka Manhattan up to what it is today. Did you know that Spring street actually had a spring running through it? The unexpected presentation was by Paul D. Miller aka Dj Spooky the Subliminal Kid. Spooky is one of my favorite Dj's who usually plays his heavy electronic sets with subliminal visuals in the background. Always trippy. His presentation was based on a large scale multimedia performance work that will be an acoustic portrait of a rapidly changing continent called "Terra Nova: Sinfonia Antarctica". Sinfonia Antarctica transforms Miller’s first person encounter with the harsh, dynamic landscape of Antarctica into multimedia portraits with music composed from the different geographies that make up the land mass. It's about the environment, sound, hip hop, electronic music and what it means to be a composer in the 21st century.

Totally "Spooky"

To end the night we met up with more friends to watch the Ringling Brothers circus parade into town. My good friend decided to call 311 for an ETA on the elephants because it was so brrrrick cold and they were half an hour late. The parade finally started around the odd hour of midnight where we got to see a caravan of elephants and clowns stomp their way out of the midtown tunnel and onto 34th street down to Madison Square Garden. It was one of those New York moments you just had to experience even if the thrill lasted a whole 3 minutes.

Fleetwood Mac last night at Madison Square Garden

So I got a chance to check off one more item I didnt know I had on my list of things to do. I got a chance to see Fleetwood Mac in concert at Madison Square Garden. It was a packed house of 20 somethings, 30 somethings, 40 somethings, 50 somethings and beyond. I grew up listening to their music so it was a lot of fun to sing and dance in the stands to what I knew. You know how you get sometimes when you know most of the lyrics and you’re singing but lyrics come up that you don’t quite remember and there’s a pause... til you can pick back up and sing rest. You know what I’m talking about. It was a fun and nostalgic night going through all the songs and feeling like a kid again. My favorite moments were jammin to “Stand Back” and “Go your own way”.

As fun as it was they definitely showed signs of a band that’s been through a lot and at certain points I felt that their sound and energy was'nt grand enough for the Garden. Besides that we were still dancin and screamin in the stands. Lindsey Buckingham's guitar solo sounded great. I think that was the point that made it a rock concert for me. Funny thing at the end was when Stevie was introduced as “our first lady Stephanie Nicks” which I thought was a odd sign of an aging band.

I had to include this shot because it was such a nice surprise. Our section was filled with out of town randoms from parts unknown sporting leather coats with tassles, acid wash denim and cowboy hats. Added to the patchouli that was in the air and I wasn't expecting fashion week in the house. This was the fashion highlight. A gorgeous woman with a severe look in all black. Hot.

Good Day people,

Its been a few minutes since my last entry. Life happens and sometimes you don't always get a chance to record it. Please read the quote below from New York magazine online Nightlife section:

"The Lower East Side was once a place where expiring hipsters would quietly drink themselves to death in downtown's last-ditch demimonde of derelict, drug-laden depravity. But this bustling neighborhood has seen a turnaround in recent years, and so has the Parkside's once sordid clientele. They keep the well drinks flowing, the classic rock blaring and the billiard balls clanking in the bar's otherwise sterile and faceless neon-lit front room."

So why you ask am I writing about this hangout that is still hipster????

Check it out on a friday night at around midnight. Go in and walk through the crowds of whiskey shooting beer guzzlers, past the restrooms and pool table and there you will find a huge security guard and a sudden shift of music. Pay the man 5 bucks and you will find a 9 piece salsa band setting the room on fire! Salseros and Salsitos come to this hideout to spin and shake on the dance floor til the wee hours. I'm currently still on the beginner side of the salsa bowl but I found this place to be an amazing space to learn and meet some very fun people. The age range is wide as you get lots of the old schoolers who are some of the coolest cats I've seen on the dance floor, spinning around the lovely ladies like tops(ladies which of you wouldn't love to be twirled around on the dance floor?).

The floor is on fire til late for all you salsa lovers and those who just want to dance to some really good live salsa.

Dance, Dance and the Size 22 shoe

Party people, party people. Over the past few days I got a chance to release some stress with one of my passions in life... Dancin'!!

My 2 highlights were:

Catchin up with one of my favorite Dj's Rich Medina who broke it down and turned it up on the Brooklyn side for the "Booklyn Bounce" party at Deity on Atlantic Ave. The dance floor was packed and full of energy as usual when Rich is on the decks. Always the perfect mix of funk, soul, hip hop and house to keep me movin. I danced my ass off! For those who haven't been yet, Deity is one of the most recent hot spots to pop up on this side of the East River. Its a Nightclub with 2 levels that blend Ancient Mythology themes with modern aesthetics. Lots of Stained glass and Organic materials. The Dj booth upstairs has a great back drop(see pic with horns). It was an enchanting space to walk into. They've also got a fair collection of spirits for a nightclub where I found myself sampling their finest tequilas on hand. As I was sampling I bumped into cocktail mixologist and Brand Ambassador for Uluvka, Colin who also resides in Brooklyn. We keep talkin about getting together for a cocktail and somehow end up at the same places having cocktails. Its a small city sometimes.

This Past Tuesday I made it out to the institutional APT where my good friend Khairi on behalf of Puma hosted the latest "MY FAVORITE THINGS" party. There we were blessed by one of the most prolific producers in the music game, DEGO from 4 HERO. Dego had the lovely Vanessa and I dancing to a gamut of music on the dance floor from Hip Hop to House to Broken Beat to Salsa to Rhumba and back again! Woo, it was hot on the dance floor! Good music does wonders to the footwork and for the soul. Upstairs is where we encounterd the Size 22 Puma Clyde sneaker who made a guest appearance and to take photos with guests in the private booth. Special thanks to StudioBooth who set up an area and projected all the wacky shots of the guests and the Clyde sneaker as they were shot. Check the pics, it was a fun time.

This Friday I plan on more dancing and working on my salsa game. Looking to take a class and then work on it at S.O.B's for their friday night salsa concerts. Its tons of fun and there are some amazing dancers there.

V Magazine party at Chelsea Piers

Last nights party was the perfect follow up to the previous in my search to experience the randomness fashion week has to offer. I had the pleasure of attending the Visionaire/Vman Magazine ice skating party last night at the Chelsea Piers. My crew and I had a blast! A very attractive crowd of models, fashion industry folks, press, fashionistas and a few sprinkles of celebrities were in the house hob-nobbin while some took to the ice giving everyone a chance to rub elbows and maybe even take a spill in front of Zac Posen, Anna Wintour, Michael Stipe and even Kanye West who seemed to have been all over fashion week apparently staking out his next look. I got a chance relive my childhood ice skating days with the crew and would in the future think twice about trying to take pics while skating. I ended up one of those taking a spill but not to be embarrassed since the ladies I slipped in front of thought it was a cute fall.

After getting my fill of skating and practically losing all circulation in my feet from strapping the skates on too tight, I turned them in and headed straight for the bar. There they were generously serving some new Belvedere vodka that had a bunch of added ingredients such as ginger, guarana and tea. Added to that was red bull and grapefruit juice which was a recipe for craziness by my cocktail standards but hey, I was just ice skating next to a 7 foot tall drag queen with a pink beehive so somehow the drink doesnt seem that crazy after all. Strolling through the crowd, I got a chance to mingle in and met a few interesting people along the way. One guy who I chatted with briefly sported an all black outfit and had on an interesting black hat with ears. My thoughts, "wow, that is a very stylish bat". Fashion can be real funny sometimes. As we started to feel real nice from the cocktails, we made our way to the dance floor where I found my flatmate the "Galactic" Angel rockin out at the Dj booth that was definitely pumpin thanks to the crazy dance flashbacks spun by Wolfie who flew in from Vienna just for the event. There we danced our crazy asses off til the lights came on.

Crazy party made for crazy times.

Richie Rich Show - Fashion Week 2009

Now I'm not really big on fashion week but when you live in New York and like to go out, its not a bad idea to see whats going on in and around the tents. So my one and maybe only show this season was the Richie Rich show in the Waldorf Astoria Grand Ballroom last night and I can say I really got a taste of some of the excitement, not to mention all the neon colors that are making a comeback.

Former Heatherette Richie Rich and old school club kid jester debuts his new line, under his own namesake. The collection may have been long in planning, but the show appeared to be quickly thrown together. I found it very amusing on the way through the Waldorf Astoria with its typically old money and very snooty clientele to watch the expressions of their guests as club kids, drag queens and yes, Ice T with Coco parade on by to the show. The looks were priceless.

The opening acts were a bit of a spectacle yet much more fun than your typical walk down the runway. It opened with a tin soldier announcing an opera singers rendition of "Send in the clowns" backed by a pianist, followed by ballet dancers in bow ties and tuxedo pants. Think chippendales do Swan Lake. Next Kat Deluna performs one of her dance tracks in somewhat of a flat performance. There was'nt a smooth transition between the Swan Lake performance to hers to get the energy pumping. Yet the dresses, pants and other garments were remarkably stayed with a strong mix of commercial (not in a bad way), trend orientated (sight the eighties) and editorial.

My favorite part of the show happened at the end when Pamela Anderson popped out in a gold bathing suit covered in glittering flowers and blew kisses to the crowd followed by Richie Rich on roller skates. It was pretty damn cute.

I just got word that I'm on the list for the V party tonight. I guess fashion week isnt over for me yet.

Sunday Night Eats and Treats in Carroll Gardens

Opting to stay on my side of the East River, my crew and I made our way out to Carroll Gardens for some Sunday night satisfaction. Our first stop, one of my favorites was the converted Sicilian men-only club Brooklyn Social. This speakeasy style bar retains the look and feel of an old-time hangout (although they've relaxed the gender requirement). The old-time Brooklyn photos hanging on the walls and a beat up pool table in the back room also help give off the old Brooklyn feel most of us have only experienced in movies like Goodfellas. One of the reasons I love this spot is the cocktail menu, which consists of standard Italian cocktails such as my go-to cocktail the Negroni (Gin, Campari and Sweet Vermouth) as well as cocktails with Italian themed names such as the Fellini and my favorite for the evening, the Sicilian Fizz. With a crew of 6 we conquered the cocktail menu plus encores special thanks to Nino behind the bar who kept them coming at a steady pace as we dominated the pool table in the back as we waited for our table to be ready at our final destination for the evening. After 2 hours and too many cocktails to remember we joyfully made our way down to one of the hidden treasures of Carroll Gardens, Lucali's Pizza. Lucali having only been around for about 2 years now is well worth the wait and for reasons you'll have to find out for yourself. My take is first of all its rustic feel and ambiance, which is a perfect date spot for anyone looking to impress. The chef and owner who is also from the neighborhood takes pride and prepares each pie with the freshest ingredients available that day and hand grating the right amount of fresh mozzarella every time. He also stays true to the neighborhood and adds ingredients from the local Italian meat shops to each masterpiece. All placed in a wood burning brick oven, lightly charring it to perfection all in a matter of a few minutes. The result, a thin crusted, garden aromatic, pepperoni pungent, perfectly cheesed creation that makes all the difference in where I eat my pie.

Ahh, sundays are great.

Pop Rally ft. Vik Muniz at the MoMA

In an effort to prove that the recession isnt completely destroying our spirit, I was thankfully called upon again by my friends at Sagatiba Cachaca(Brazilian Rum) to produce and manage the cocktail bars for the Museum of Modern Art's Pop Rally event. PopRally is a program of events at The MoMA and P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center that features collaborations with artists and musical acts, performances, film screenings, receptions, and special viewings of exhibitions at accessible prices. Past events include performances by Cat Power, Les Savy Fav, Patti Smith, Chicks on Speed, and PaperRad and friends. Last nights event was the closing party for video artist Vik Muniz (Brazilian, b. 1961), Vik Muniz is the ninth artist to participate in Artist’s Choice, a series of exhibitions in which an artist serves as curator, selecting works from MoMa’s vast collection to create an exhibition. Muniz has chosen a
rebus—a combination of unrelated visual and linguistic elements to create a larger deductive meaning—as the organizing principle of his presentation.

I had the pleasure and challenge of recreating Sagatiba cocktails for the 350+ guests this evening. On the menu was the Classic Caiprinha, a Blueberry Caiprinha and "Sweet Heat" which was a chilled shot of the aged Sagatiba chased with a strawberry dipped in a cayenne and sugar mix. You've gotta try this! Special thanks to my stellar bar team who made our production seem effortless and I couldn't have done this without them.

A New Chapter in Cocktail Culture

5 nights in a row of indulging in one of my favorite activities…Cocktailing. And so you know Im aware of it, the word cocktail will show up a few more times in this entry...cocktails-cocktails-cocktails.

Last week was dedicated to ushering in what I believe will be a new phase in the cocktail culture here in New York. Nirvino, a startup out of San Francisco promises to make the average diner and cocktailer more educated and involved when it comes to what they choose to drink. It also lets them share new information with their friends and develop new relationships with other enthusiasts. I had the pleasure of hosting a soft launch for Nirvino at Madam Geneva in the East Village. The guest list was a short but concentrated group of industry brand reps, mixologists, magazine writers and bloggers and of course fellow cocktail lovers. Having the event as Phil of Nirvino and I discussed, in a cocktail lounge that chose to create a simple concept with their cocktails (preserved jam cocktails in 3 different flavors served with either Gin or Vodka) to represent their unique style mirrored the fresh idea of the Nirvino vision and staying true to their core. We imbibed these delicious jam cocktails made with 42 Below Vodka (special thanks to Paul Franich) and also had custom cocktail ice spheres sent in just for the event. It was a great space with fun people and tasty cocktails.

As the week carried on we indulged in more of what the New York cocktail scene has to offer. Special thanks to:

*Esteban at Apotheke who gave us a 101, 102 and 103 on mixology as well as a flaming version of his Sweet and Vicious.

*Justin at Pranna would hosted us for a Pranna cocktail tasting Wednesday and then shaked up Cabana Cachaca cocktails for another Nirvino event. My favorite was the Winter Spice, a warm-spiced wine cocktail.

*Marcie at Madam Geneva who held down the bar for the 2-hour blitz of our 40+ guests

* "Sweetie" our server at Employees Only (she asked that I call her that), who was well versed in the cocktail menu.

Puerto Rico

So before I go too deep into the future and into a post for this current week which was a turbulent ride on liquid slide, I think it would be best to reflect on one of the reasons why I love New York.

I had an amazing time on my seriously needed trip to Puerto Rico last week. So many little experiences and meeting new and creative people. I had a chance to be in a music video as well as help with a little choreography. Cocktailing We Go

So I spent most of my seven nights last week having cocktails at several hot cocktail spots in the borough of Manhattan. The mini blitz of cocktail joints have not just to do with the fact that I love a good cocktail (as I also play in a little cocktail mixology) but I’ve taken on a project to write about cocktails in NYC for a website. The site soon to be revealed hails from my hometown of San Francisco and will soon be making its premiere in NY for your drinking pleasure. Details to follow as the project progresses.
My first stop on Monday was Tribeca's Macao Trading Co. A bi-level restaurant decked with antiques to evoke "the 1940s portside feel of Macao’s red lantern district." The Employees Only crew collaborated with David Waltuck (chef/owner of Chanterelle) on this beautifully reincarnated space that was formerly the Sugar Room. Although I only had cocktails there, the sights and aromas in the air was more than enough to lure me back for dinner sooner than later. Tuesday, I hit one my favorites Angels Share, a speakeasy tucked inside a sushi bar thru an unmarked door located in the East Village. My friend Shigei the lead mixologist is one of the most finessed barmen out here and I personally love the fact that the menu is comprised of classic cocktails as well as their house cocktails named after famous jazz tracks. Thursday and next on the list was Apoteke, once an opium den where I had pleasure once again to walk down the infamous Doyers alley that just a couple decades ago hosted Chinatowns most notorious gangsters and gangland activity. Esteban one of the lead mixologists and long time colleague to Albert Trummer had me stunned silly with his tequila based “Sweet and Vicious”. Moving on to Friday, I made my way to BoBo, the beautifully bohemian duplex of a restaurant in the West Village where my good buddy Naren the cocktailian jet setter (my take on his lifestyle), added a tongue and cheek style to the cocktail menu and served me a delicious blue elixir followed by toasty and spicy truffle butter rum cocktail. Mmmmm. To end my Friday I slid over to the notorious GoldBar where my good friend Tim designed the cocktail menu and laid out one of the most elaborate tastings of the week. Out of the all the cocktails I had (too many to count) I’d have to say the standout was the cocktail fit for the season, the Pumpkin Egg Nog. It was another warm cocktail for this cold evening with Spice infused Hennessey, Navan Vanilla cognac, Pumpkin Puree, Egg Nog and Maple syrup. Mmmm. The libations put us in the mood and sent us to groove as we got to rub elbows with the likes of Benicio Del Toro amongst others. It was a great night. To end the week on Sunday, I made my way over to Gutter, the vintage bowling alley in Williamsburg for a surprise Bday party. Upon arrival I dove straight into their Bloody Marias (tequila) that were spicy to my liking and a great way to spend an end to a great week of cocktail tastings. Now the fun begins. I’ve got to collect all the cocktail napkins with my notes and make sense of it all.

Bangin in 2009 with a Bollywood twist!

As I have in the past three years, I had the pleasure to Dj the New Year in with the Avroko restaurant family. The first 2 at Public, their first restaurant now a Nolita institution and this past NYE at their new venture Double Crown. This year, the Bollywood theme had us up to our manicured eyebrows in bindis, saris, champagne and tons of antics. As you entered the space lavished in colored lights and lotus flowers, an androgynous deity greeted you with a glass of champagne while in a standing yoga position. To include everyone in the experience there was a make up area where you could get an intricate Double Crown tattoo, make up and a bindi. Themed parties are so much fun when the guests get involved and with all the staff in costume it was an outrageously transcending experience. I'm now a fan of “Mission to Mars” the band brought in for a live set that consisted of a sitar player and throat singer backed with an electric guitarist and a drummer. They played a rockin electronic breakbeat set for the “wedding ceremony” of the 2 beauties and a half human half horse being. An exotic belly dancer completed the performance and seduced the crowd with swirls of snake-like hip moves while balancing a tray of lit candles on her head. The temperature rose about 20 degrees. You had to have been there to see all this in action. To keep the heat going, Tamer and I took the reigns and dropped a hard mix of electro and house music to set the dance floor on fire. It was an all-you-can-dance boogie buffet to bring in 2009! Special thanks to Nacho who started the evening with a musical trip around the world.

Giant Step w/ Victor Duplaix and on...

Last night I got to shake a tail feather at the last Giant Step dance party of the year. Since spring, Giant Step records brought in a guest Dj once a month and took over the Hudson bar in an invite only event for their e-subscribers. For the final party they brought in Kervyn Mark and Kamala with Viktor Duplaix as the headliner so I knew we were in for some good soulful house music. I happen to come in on Kamala's set and the current track was so hot, it sent me straight to the dance floor, kickin. I love walking into a party like that! Viktor Duplaix jumped on and worked it with his smooth style mixed in with a little afro and brazilian beats. I've been hearing more Dj's mix Baile funk into their sets which encourages lots of hip movement and is so much fun to dance to. After all the holiday eating I've been doing, this was the perfect party to work it out and I'm sure I was'nt the only one feeling this way. I also noticed a nice handful of Dj's in the house for this one which usually suggests the Dj line up is good. A few to mention that I bumped into were my boys Obah and Cato of the Manjinga parties, Nickodemus, Talib Kweli (who I caught the other night, no comment) and Taboo of the Soul Summit parties.

After that party our crew felt the tequila in our blood was pumpin too hard to stop, so we made our way back downtown to Mr West where the sound system PUMPED! The Dj had the new Common track Universal Mind Control on and it sounded hot. I was wondering if they kept the same system from space's former incarnation Opus 22 by the same techs that put together Cielo's. Oddly enough, during the course of the evening there was a gent who was apparently recession-proof as he would toss a short stack of $1 bills out to the crowd. In the air of wanting to look "cool" not too many people reacted to it as a frenzy you would think so I decided to photo document all the bills as they dropped and sat there...Of course I picked a few up.

I've gotta give thanks to my new friend Chris who was a great host there. Chris is part of the crew over at Mr West who walked in our crew of 15 and set us up with a table of what seemed to be endless amounts of liquor which kept our crew happy and dancing. I got a few reports this morning on the after effects.

Going to check out now. I've gotta put all my music together for short Dj set New Years Eve over at Double Crown. Should be big fun.

From the Subway to the Jazz Club

This past Tuesday I had the pleasure of catching the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble in a sold out show at the Jazz Standard. HBE is a 9 piece band comprised mostly of horns performing with a Jazz sound heavily inspired by Hip Hop. Think: Hip Hop Big Band. I was inspired to see them when I happen to catch them down in the Union Square subway station just days before. Now I see lots of live music on the street, subways and stations all the time but for once I was drawn by the music and with the acoustic ability of the underground station to let sound travel it was undeniable. Their sound was so big and true that I felt myself emotionally engaged and "hypnotized" if you will, (I would love the chance to catch a skilled MC with a real story to tell at the microphone with these guys). I was pumped by the high energy and vocal range of the horns, especially the thump of the tuba backed up by the slick drum licks and percussion section. Check "Balicky Bon", "War" and "Hypnotic" off their NY Live album and you'll hear what I'm nodding about. I definitely picked up what they were putting down literally, in the form of 2 CD's.

In this digital world its a breath of fresh air to be reminded where music comes from. Once again I've been touched with the sweet sound of live music.

A Decadent Sunday Evening a la Double Crown

Good Day people,

This past Sunday after taking in some culture and supporting a friend who was performing in a take on the Cinderella Story, our group unanimously decided to head down to Double Crown over on the Bowery for dinner. A good friend, Tamer Hamawi who was part of our group and happens to be one of the Managers of the restaurant, influenced the decision. Who’s to say no, especially having dined there the week before and being a regular at Madame Geneva, the enchanting cocktail bar tucked away in the back. It is remarkable how they transformed this space from the old Manahatta, into something far more visually exciting. Its almost like going on that long needed trip without springing for airfare.

As we perused the menu with its bold take on British colonial/Far east influenced cuisine we decided to have Tamer take us on a tour instead. First stop the Spicy Singapore style Laksa, then the East and West coast oyster platter, the crispy sepia, and the scrumptious chili-caramel pork belly, each dished paired with the perfect wine and/or champagne.

I have to say that as a carnivore to the bone (pun intended), It was the cross cut bone marrow glazed with miso and orange-olive marmalade and the succulent Big Braised beef short rib glazed with a Guinness 5 spice sauce, perfectly paired with a 2005 Chateau de Chorey burgundy that really set the experience on fire. We were satisfied and delighted by our jaunt through the menu. To finish, I imbibed my usual, a little Fernet Branca to ease the digestion because a million Italians cant be wrong!

Cindy Sherman One-Person Photo Exhibit

I've been a fan of Cindy Sherman's work for several years now and had the opportunity to view her latest exhibit in NY since 2004. Maybe its because she has been a successful one woman production for the past 30 years. Acting as Photographer, Model, make up artist, hairstylist and wardrobe stylist, her work displays her unbelievable ability to shape-shift as she further investigates distorted ideas of beauty, self image and aging. All shot in a green room, Cindy Sherman is able to transport the story from anywhere on earth (or in a surreal world) while slightly toying with your curiosity and perception.
